Banking the Moment

A deserted lighthouse on a tiny island.

Sometimes, when life gets too hectic and I am feeling overwhelmed, I dip into my bank. Not the typical bank, but one that is filled to the brim with shining moments of joy. Banking my moments helps keep me focused, happy, and peaceful.

Try it for yourself. Choose one picture a day, drop it into your bank, and pluck it out when you need some balance. Let yourself travel into the good feelings you had when you banked your moment. Smell the aromas, remember the textures, relive the sounds. You'll feel yourself change–a change for the good.

Quiet time alone on a windy beach...

...with only one set of footprints to be seen.

The lacework edging of the sea...

...and the lacework Spanish moss dangling from the trees.

Flocks of seabirds facing into the wind.

Drifting sand dunes and distant islands.

A seahorse smoothed by the wind and sands.

A partially buried treasure.

A washboard of ripples.

The thrill of being unnoticed by a flock of shore birds.

Walking alongside a sand shark that was a few feet from shore.

Talking to the sea turtle.

Tripping upon a remarkable mushroom and taking the time to notice.

Making a ritual of saying good night to the sun.

Now it is your turn. Choose a moment, bank it, and return to it whenever you need some peace. I guarantee that it will work for you.

We're on our way to California now and making our way through weather warning of high winds, tornados, rain, and who knows what else?

All joys,

Sharon

P.S. All photos (except sea turtle) were taken on a private island on the "Gold Coast" of Georgia. Pure bliss for me to experience this place. I felt like Anne Morrow Lindbergh as she walked the beaches of Captiva Island and contemplated writing her book Gift from the Sea. One of my favorites.

Sharon, this was so lovely. And I am wild over that iron seahorse. You really don't see that many seahorse things, and I find seahorses to be such fascinating creatures. I loved the nature walk and all the beauty you shared with us. I live near the sea, and just knowing it is there makes my heart sing. My husband just said to me yesterday after looking at Golden Rain Trees, "We really do live in paradise, don't we?" And I said, "Most definitely."

XO,

Sheila :-)

Oops! I meant to say, safe travels!!! I hope the winds die down for you.

Anne M Lindbergh is an author I read and reread periodically. It was nice to have you mention her. Thanks for visiting Buttermilk Cottage and I hope you'll come back often. Hope you're traveling safely. Bad weather reports seem to be covering a large area just now.

Thankfully I just need to get outside and tale a walk in my neighborhood to getb that feeling :-)

But when I used to live in the big city I did just that, dug in to my memories :-)

Have a great day now!

What a beautiful post Sharon. I loved the title 'Banking the Moment'.
All too often we forget all those wonderful moments that come to us in the midst of our everyday lives. Moments like these can most certainly help lift us up when we need it.

May you have a safe, and happy trip back to your sweet home in CA.

I like that phrase, "Banking the moments..."

And YOUR bank is full of treasures! Gift from the Sea is one of my all-time favorites, too. I pick up extra copies any time I see them to use as gifts for dear friends. (I've found so MANY editions. Sometimes it's hard not to keep them all!)

That is a lovely idea. I guess I do that from time-to-time subconsciously, but I like your idea of "the bank" better.
Godspeed on your journey...

When things get complicated at work (more often than I would want to) I take a look at my PC screen: my puppies. I immediately feel relieved. I think of them, how they sound, their soft fur, our play moments...it's certainly good medicine for the hectic times. Good advice Sharon!! :o)
Be safe on your trip! I've been reading about the severe weather up in the USofA.
hugs your way.

Beautiful sentimental post and thoughts that speak to me, as i do exactly the same. I always relive moments of happiness in my mind and they bring back the joy I felt. Pictures indeed help doing just that and I have a multitude of my own personal banks.;)
Your photographs are stunning.

I am wishing you safe travels. It seems like the storms have left the Midwest and are heading East. Be safe.

A favorite of mine also. I think of these days as pebbles in a basket. I pick one up and turn it over in my mind, memories are things we can visit anytime, anywhere.

Returning once again, as you did to ButtermilkCottage...you're right, the "art" sweater is something special and although "Pleasant Street" is quite nice, I favor "Buttermilk Alley."

I have a memory book in my head and open it frequently - a beach in Denmark, the deck of ship in the sea of Japan, my grandmother's veranda - it helps me sleep when insomnia strikes, to relax when the world is crazy or just escape when I'm stuck in traffic.

I do that too but I don't even need a photo - I just call it my mental photo albumn. Those pictures are stunning - who wouldn't feel better after remembering time spent somewhere like that?! Hope all is well in California for you and that the threatened bad weather doesn't materialise.

What an excellent thought - "banking the moment..." and so easily done!

Wishing you a safe journey to the West and new moments to bank.

sharon, you know you found a heart in that mushroom, right?

this is a wonderful post. i asssume this is your coast of maine, 'our' coast of new england.

i very much like what you've said about banking memories and pictures (and thoughts and experiences). it makes me think of our emotional bank accounts. some people may make many small deposits, some only one special one, but those are the people whose withdrawals we give and support so willingly. (it's when someone tries to withdraw when they haven't put anything in that we feel used....)

my pleasure to stop by, sharon. you see the world as our beloved lori does. how lucky ducky we all are

love

That is just how I felt on my trip to New England. I wanted to soak in each day of autumn loveliness, family, and friends.

We knew we would be arriving "past peak" but it was still breathtaking in the beauty surrounding us.

I, too, love AML's Gift's From the Sea. I hope to reread her diaries soon, having finally found the last volume I was missing (cheap used on Amazon).

Oh my goodness Sharon! I loved this...in fact, when you mentioned to pull a favorite picture from your bank, it was of a beach scene, much like you showed. Then I scrolled and thought, yes, any of my pictures from Tybee Island off of Savannah - ha! Then I read that your pictures were from GA as well - what fun! I agree with you about "Gift from the Sea" I read that 9 years ago, which prompted me to find a little island for our family to RELAX on. I found Tybee and we have been there 3 times since. What an enjoyable time I've had with your post today - thank you!

That is a wonderful idea and very useful too, I shall remember it.

Your photos are lovely and all the blue sea and sky so cheering, the private island sounds blissful. It is very Autumnal here now and gets dark so early :(

I loved the sunset photo too!

I do hope your journey is (or was) safe and pleasant :)

Thank you for sharing some of what's in your bank account with us - such beautiful photos! When I saw the seahorse, my heart leapt a little...I've always had a thing for seahorses and the weathered one in your bank is just gorgeous. I have my own bank account of happy photos from my garden over the years. It's on my computer in a folder called "Happy Folder" and when I occasionally open it, it transports me to another time. Thanks for the reminder to always keep that account full!

I hope your home in California has welcomed you well and your trip there fared without the turbulance of the bad weather. Here in Ohio, we have already seen snow claiming it's place amongst the fallen leaves. The heavy jackets brought out early along with gloves and heavy boots. Hot cocoa with tiny marshmellows floating like islands in a chocolate sea, warming up chubby fingers and cold noses..
Looking forward to reading of your time while in California.

Oh my gosh, home almost a week and no posting yet. If you could see what we're doing, well, you would understand.

I am making amends with my dear garden. Some of you may know that we had a record breaking (and heart breaking) 112 degree blitz here in October. Fraises des bois and other plants I've had for years were fried to a brown crisp.

Posting soon. Thanks so much for your loving e-mails.

Sharon - Your photos are beautiful and your words ring true. Happiness starts from within and we should all find some quiet solace and look inward - our true happiness is there.

Gift from the Sea is one of my alltime favorite books - I have it close by and pick it up to read from it all the time.
