My Wish for You

My resolution for 2011 is to always see the world through the wonder-filled eyes of a child.

Desiderata

Max Ehrman
circa 1923

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
Max Ehrmann

I start each day with these treasured words.

Blessings to you and yours in 2011.

Amen, Sharon! I visited with my 93 year friend this afternoon. He lost his older daughter and his beloved wife of 65 years this year. He is one of the happiest people I know despite his losses! You have to believe the glass is half full not half empty! Happy New Year dear friends! xx Nancy

Thank you so much for sharing that passage, Sharon. It is one of the most beautiful and enlightened things I've ever read. So full of truth, and so uplifting. It makes me feel very happy to know there was a person out there who thought and wrote these words.

When I tell you 'Happy New Year,' please know that it's not a hollow saying...I really do wish you a most beautiful 12 months, with new discoveries, wonder, laughter, rest, good company, creativity, and a feeling of contentment in the simple things.

Love,

Wise and kindly spoken truths, Sharon. I'm bookmarking this page to help myself remember your wish for me. I especially need to keep in the forefront of my heart the reminder to see the world through the wonder-filled eyes of a child. Gratefully, my 4 year old grandson helps me achieve that one.

Here's to a happy and healthy 2011 for you and your family.

My oldest sister came home from college years and years ago and brought that with her. I read it over and over, trying to know her a bit better. As I get older, I'm thinking of ways to take the positive high road more and more often. I am pretty positive until I think of ways I sometimes find fault in others. I'm curtailing some of my "observations" and resisting the urge to "share" them unless they are happy and uplifting.

I've received a few letters about the Desiderata and I just need to mention that I seem to focus on a new part of it every day.

Like today-I read and re read "If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be great and lesser persons than yourself."

I think that is one of my greatest failings, comparing myself to others. "Why can't I do better?" etc. Jeff always says, just focus on doing what YOU can do and do it in the best way you know how.
